An idea came into existence in the 20th century about the US having a national health care system.
While overall coverage still remains elusive in the US, the uninsured still remain nonexistent. A leading professor of social medicine has stated that is it very clear that in this day and time, almost 15% of Americans are not insured and the rest has some form of coverage. Americans who are covered are satisfied somewhat with there insurance, even though they think that the system is very poor as a whole. But they are not sounding the horns for rapid change. In fact, any type of health care reform that will threaten to change the current medical arrangements of the people that are insured now will provoke strong public resistance.
Politicians who are looking to incorporate a national health care system are looking at other nations that already adopt a universal system. Let’s take a look at Canada’s health care system:
The system that is place in Canada might not cost Canadians anything, but the system does not provide the best in health care. Canadians often have to wait days or even months to see a specialist. And if you need to go to the emergency room you can expect to wait long hours to get care which in some cases cold be fatal. Some also suggest that we should adopt a universal health care system that would function like a business. A system that is ran like this could give our citizens a higher quality of services and goods, even at prices that are modest which people could afford. Studies are still showing that Canada’s health care system suffers greatly in the quality of service that it provides for it citizens.
While the US medical industry is very unique, it would never be able to be efficient and effective enough to run like a corporation. More health plans that are market based are clearly the answer to having a nationally based system. The industry needs to look at the model of American business and learn how to adapt a way of implementation to create incentives that would have a positive effect on our society rather which would allow us to still have the best health care system in the world.
